Super 8

I hate feeling like my blog is becoming a place where all I do is talk about crap like TV shows, books, and movies I like. I especially dislike it when I'm all bossy and like, "GO SEE THIS RIGHT NOW OMG."

So I'll keep it short. ;)

Today, I saw Super 8. I was pleasantly surprised! It was actually a really good, solid piece of moviemaking and sci-fi. It was like...E.T./Lost/Signs/War of the Worlds. Which isn't a too-shabby mix. Plus, it was carried really well by a cast of KIDS. With kids, you tend to get a lot of overacting and, especially in scary movies, a ton of obnoxious child-shrieking. But there was little shrieking. Or at least, it wasn't obnoxious. And they were SUCH good actors. My mind was probably more blown by how strong the cast was than by any of the special effects or anything.

It was quite suspenseful and tense in that Abrams-"Lost" way. And it had a very Spielberg feel (think "Jurassic Park" and "E.T."). So if you like either of those two guys, aliens, or good sci-fi stories, it's definitely worth seeing.

Oh also, JJ Abrams: YOUR LENS FLARES, OMG. It's like DARK and there are lens flares. It was SUPER noticeable in "Star Trek", so I was loling when it showed up here too.

Overall?

A long time ago...

When I was a kid, my parents got me "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga," and it's basically a behind-the-scenes film on Star Wars. It focuses on Return of the Jedi (which was my favorite as a kid due to Jabba's Palace and the Ewoks), but you get a pretty good look at some of the scenes and ideas from the entire trilogy.

I watched this thing INCESSANTLY. Of course, it was on VHS, so eventually all the tapes unwound. So I'd sit there and meticulously try to rewind them so I could watch it again. And the cardboard box it came in was completely beat up from overuse, a few puppies, and a long life in general. But it was SUCH a great thing. It changed my third grade life.

I FOUND IT ON YOUTUBE AND WANT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU! SCRAGGLY STRIPS OF TAPE NOT INCLUDED!
(Yes, that's Mark Hamill narrating. Yes, it's before the "remastered" versions. Yes, it's incredibly grainy. DEAL WITH IT.)

"Puppet maker" for a movie like Star Wars remains on my list of dream jobs.

Not on my list of dream jobs? Being INSIDE Jabba the Hutt.

I'm not going to post anymore on here, but if you want to finish it, you can watch it on Youtube.

Final (fashion?) Frontier.

(Click pics to enlarge)

Sooo as you can see, galaxy and celestial prints are making a big statement on the red carpet! Personally, even though like half of these have made the "worst dressed" lists, I am ENAMORED with this trend. I love the idea of WEARING OUTER SPACE. Who's the genius that came up with this??

Unfortunately, his name's Christopher Kane and his pieces run upwards of about $500, up to like $3000+. A little out of most of our budgets. But fear not, Space Explorers and Jedi! I've made an itty bitty Polyvore set featuring similar items for smaller costs (though still not ideal!):

(Click for product info!)

The best deal on there is the American Apparel t-shirt, which last I checked was on sale for $13. Here's hoping that big name cheap retailers will cotton on to the trend soon (looking at you, Target, H&M, and Forever 21!!)!

For more spacey products check out Etsy and Zazzle. I especially like these "spacewalker" shoes!

What do you think? Is this look a win or a fail?

L0v3 4 g33ks.

Looking for a song for your nerd-love on Valentine's Day? Making a mix that only you and yours are geeky cool enough to get? Just want to listen to a couple of ridiculously campy/geeky/comical songs?

Luckily, I have a few of those:

"She's romantic, known to panic, with anxiety attacks.
Literary, it's so scary, reading Brontës back to back.
She's playing Ragnarok on her mom's Magnavox.
She's underneath my skin like a million nanobots."

This song is just lulzy and full to brimming with terrible Star Trek puns.
(The sad thing about both these bands are they're "the cool guys" in Star Trek fandom...)

"Captain Kirk went to the planet,
There he fought the man-lizard,
He saved the ship, invented the gun powder
But that's not good enough for you is it? No!
You don't want a boyfriend, what you want is Mr. Spock..."

Ignore the "Megamind" video...it's a cute song about a comic book hero and his comic book girlfriend! AWW.

Enjoy, nerf-herders!

To boldly go...

I made these for a friend last year. I thought I'd share the lulz:

Space: the final frontier.

I'm currently taking a break from doing my science fiction midterm, and thought I'd share with you some of my favorite retro-futurist art.

I actually think this one (above) is from the Electric Light Orchestra's "Out of the Blue" album art. I adore their album art and predict an ELO revival sometime in the near future (it's like Muse with more 70's harmonizing, for those of you interested.)

Also, I desperately want a dance party ON THE MOON!

I just really like all the bright colors and the kitchsiness of it all. There was such an optimistic view of life beyond Earth long ago, and it saddens me that we're now done with the shuttle program (like we're regressing backwards. Now that we know due to gravity and lack of oxygen that we can't hold a party on the moon, it's like we stopped caring.). I feel like the anticipation and excitement in discovering the unknown portrayed in these pictures has long since died with the artists.

Anyway, I highly recommend googling retro-futurist art and pulp science fiction covers. They're very awesome. =)
